love letter as a sign of their eternal love. The house has two floors. In the hall you can see the original bronze statue of Juliet, created by the Veronese sculptor Nereo Costantini in 1972. Here you can also see the costumes that people wore during the Middle Ages. Next to it is a fireplace room. The fireplace is decorated with a marble image of a hat %u2013 the family coat of arms. On the second floor of the house there is a bedroom where the bed created for the film %u00abRomeo and Juliet%u00bb is on display. The Oscar-winning 1968 film Romeo and Juliet was directed by Franco Zeffirelli and is one of the most famous screen adaptations of William Shakespeare%u2019s play of the same name (more than 150 films have been made based on the play since 1900). The film%u2019s main actors were close in age to the oriental characters: Leonard Whiting (Romeo) was seventeen at the time, and Olivia Hussey (Juliet) was sixteen. The film is very close to the original play, it accurately conveys the life and customs of that time, describes the characters%u2019 personalities, and depicts the ancient streets and squares where the events unfolded. And most importantly, the film%u2019s powerful drama leaves no one indifferent: to this day, Franco Zeffirelli%u2019s film remains unsurpassed in many ways. The film%u2019s poster says: %u00abRomeo and Juliet.%u00bb Four centuries later %u2013 love is still 15 years old.%u00bb The brilliant music for the film was written by the outstanding Italian composer Nino Rota. (Four years later, in 1972, Nino Rota wrote the music for another cinematic masterpiece %u2013 the saga %u00abThe Godfather%u00bb.)Let%u2019s return to the streets of Verona.Piazza delle ErbeThis is the oldest square in Verona. During the Roman Empire, it was the center of political and economic life, and over time, the ancient Roman buildings gave way to medieval ones. There is a small market in the square where souvenirs and other things, leather bags, T-shirts are sold.Also on the square is the %u00abPalazzo Maffei%u00bb, a baroque palace and a column with the lion of St. Mark %u2013 a symbol of Venice, since Verona was part of the Venetian Republic in the Middle Ages.On the north side are the Mazzanti houses, built in the 16th century.The Mazzanti family was engaged in trade, owned various shops and houses on this side of the square. The facades of the houses are covered with frescoes, also dating back to the 16th century. Below this side of the square are bars and restaurants where tourists stop to rest, try the local gastronomy and admire the beauty of Verona. From this side you can also see the Torre dei Lamberti. The 84-metre-high tower belonged to the Lamberti family and was built in 1172. Between 1779 and 1798, a clock was added to the centre of the tower.The oldest monument in the square is the fountain with the statue of the Madonna of Verona from the Roman era (380 AD).Another historical monument is the socalled %u00abTribune%u00bb.
